GOLDIE BOOKS TOP AMATEUR FOR AYR OPENER

AYR Racecourse stages its first evening meeting of 2019 tonight (Tuesday) with a seven race card getting under way at 5.45pm.

The opening race is a 1m 5f handicap with the horses being ridden by lady amateur riders. Jim Goldie has booked Serena Brotherton, the top rider in this sphere, to partner Elite Icon who has been running well of late and won at Musselburgh over a furlong further earlier in the month.

Mike Smith trains Go Guarantor who dwelt in the stalls at Hamilton last time out before running on and he also has the help of a good jockey in Carol Bartley and his trainer is hopeful of a big run.

The Smith stable has several runners on the night including five-time course winner Gworn who is making his seasonal reappearance and has dropped 12lb in the weights since his last win.

Mike said : “He is certainly well weighted  and he loves this track. I would be hopeful of a big run. I also run Haymarket in the last and he ran well enough last time out and should go well over this longer trip.”

Paul Hanagan is an interesting jockey booking on the Kevin Ryan trained Last Empire in the 6f maiden and this 70,000 guineas purchase has only raced once before and that was on heavy ground at Haydock last October and she should be more suited to tonight’s quicker underfoot conditions.
