MATCH MAKER DEFIES TWO YEAR ABSENCE

THE highlight of Friday night’s action at Ayr was the performance of the Simon Crisford trained Match Maker who won the Guinness Novice Stakes over seven furlongs.

The four year-old gelding had been out of action for two years and his last run was in the Class 1 Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2017 but he was in prime condition for this return to the track.

Jockey Graham Lee got Match Maker up on the line to beat favourite Alright Sunshine by a neck and he could go to win at a higher level.

Graham said afterwards : “The further he went the better he got. It was a top training performance.”

The opening Isle of Jura Handicap for amateur riders went to the veteran Remember Rocky who won at 25-1 for Perthshire trainer Lucy Normile and jockey Abbie McCain. Although sent off at a big price this was by no means a shock as the 10 year-old has won twice at the track previously.

There was a return to form in the marathon 1m 7f  Coca Cola Handicap for the Rebecca Menzies trained Trautmann, given an excellent ride from Alistair Rawlinson, who wore down his rivals to win well.

The feature race of the night was the Tennent’s Lager Handicap which saw an all the way win for Lamloom trained by David O’Meara and ridden by David Nolan. And the same trainer jockey combination won the last race with Mujassam.
