ONE of the finest day’s racing at Ayr Racecourse in recent years was highlighted by a tremendous win in the feature race for a filly returning after a year off the track.

Rebecca Rocks gave trainer Henry Candy his third win in the£50,000 British Stallion Studs EBF Land O’Burns Fillies Stakes under Paul Hanagan.

Winning jockey Hanagan said : “She did that well. I don’t ride often for Henry Candy but he is really good at getting fillies like this ready for big races. “

The two-time champion jockey had further cause to celebrate as he rode two more winners giving him a hat trick on the day.

He was oozing confidence on the Richard Fahey trained Irreverent  in the Bob Valentine 80th Birthday Celebration Handicap over seven furlongs and the horse eased clear to win by two and three quarter lengths from Fastman.

And his third win came in the last, the Debra Charity Handicap over six furlongs, on Boy In The Bar, the 4-1 co-favourite, for trainer Ian Williams. This was a taking performance from the eight year-old who held off the fast finishing Upstaging to win by a neck.

There were two quality Class 2s on the card with the £40,000 Wellington Bar Paisley Handicap for the Winton Cup over 1m 5f giving Wantage based trainer Heather Main her first win at Ayr with her first runner when Island Brave, 12-1, came from off the pace under Alistair Rawlinson to win by three quarters of a length from Kelly’s Dino.

The other Class 2 contest was the JW Grant Builders Merchants Handicap for the Johnstone Rose Bowl and Club Wexford, trained by Roger Fell and ridden by Ben Curtis, was an all the way winner.

This really was a day to savour with some very famous colours being carried throughout the afternoon for owners including The Queen, Khalid Abdullah, Sir Evelyn De Rothschild, Highclere Thoroughbred Racing and Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum.
