A change of tactics saw Faylaq make most of the running in the Luxury Staycations At Western House Hotel Handicap.
Trained by Jim Goldie and ridden by Paul Mulrennan, the 7-2 chance held off dual course and distance winner Pol Roger by three quarters of a length.
“We had a bit of a discussion about tactics and decided to try and go from the front,” Goldie said. “The plan is to aim him at the £100,000 Lanark Silver Bell at Hamilton Park in two weeks and this win should see him get in that race.”
Goldie and Mulrennan were earlier on the mark with Braes Of Doune in the Boom Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Handicap.
It was a textbook last-to-first ride from Mulrennan, who got the 5-2 second favourite up close home to beat his rival from Saturday night, Sir Garfield, going away by half a length.
“He can be frustrating but he’s got plenty of ability and a fair bit of pace,” Goldie reported. “He can operate at seven-furlongs and he has also won here over 1m 2f.”
Linda Perratt bounced back to from with a double supplied by Keep Me Stable and Sixcor while Alistair Whillans and Mike Smith were on the mark with Ramon Di Loria and Glasses Up respectively.
