Musselburgh – Report 1st January 2024

Gordon Brown – Race Reporter

Gordon has a wealth of experience of racing through his background in the written and broadcast media. His current principle role is reporting and supporting the scene in Scotland on Racing TV and relaying the latest news with Scottish angles.

Benson gained a game repeat win in the tote.co.uk Hogmaneigh Handicap Hurdle at Musselburgh for Ryan Mania and Sandy Thomson.

Sent off at 7-2, the Greenlaw raider saw off fast-finishing Holmes St Georges by a length.

“When he’s in that sort of form he is very hard to pass,” said Thomson. “I suppose  you would have to be looking about trying to win the Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso again now after this.”

Lucinda Russell and Derek Fox completed a double courtesy of Rory The Cat and Indian Louis while Harry Derham also saddled two winners with Fedelio Vallis and Republican and went on to enjoy his first treble with scoring at Exeter with Bolsover Bill.

There was a fourth Scottish success in the shape of Scots Poet, trained by Ewan Whillans and ridden by Craig Nichol.
