Musselburgh – Report 2nd August 2024

Gordon Brown – Race Reporter

Gordon has a wealth of experience of racing through his background in the written and broadcast media. His current principle role is reporting and supporting the scene in Scotland on Racing TV and relaying the latest news with Scottish angles.

Cover Point, trained by Julie Camacho, landed the £20,000 Bernard Hunter Mobile Cranes Handicap over five-furlongs at Musselburgh on Friday evening.

Equipped with first-time cheek pieces, the 4/1 chance saw off Curious Rover by a short-head with Spring Is Sprung only a neck back in third place.

“The headgear definitely helped and I’d say there is a fair bit left in the tank,” said winning jockey Callum Rodriguez. “Hopefully he can build on this as he’s got a lovely willing attitude.”

Rodriguez completed a quick-fire double when Toy Soldier romped home for Newmarket trainer George Scott in the EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes.

The 10/11 favourite stormed home two and a half lengths clear of Mayor Of Maghera and Rodriguez said: “He was a good third at Catterick last time so he’s shown he can handle these bends – he’s a real good nippy sort of horse.”
