GWEEDORE, trained near Galashiels by Katie Scott, carries the hopes of Scotland in the £180,000 Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday.
The borders raider bids to become the first home-based winner since mighty chestnut Roman Warrior shouldered top-weight to victory from the local Cree Lodge yard of Nigel Angus in 1975.
“It will be his first ever run over six-furlongs but he’ll certainly be doing his best,” said Scott, who is on target for another personal-best campaign. “He’s a big price and it’s a big day for his owners as they are great supporters of Scottish racing.
“We’re happy enough to be drawn in the middle and hopefully that is where the pace is. He has been a fantastic horse for us and fingers crossed he will be competitive. Hopefully they will go a strong pace and he stay on and be delivered at the end.”
