A massive well done goes out to Rowan Scott for winning his first Group 2 race at Doncaster’s St Leger festival.

 

The Hawick-born jockey was on board 40-1 outsider Ubettabelieveit who landed the Flying Childers Stakes by a short-head for his Malton trainer boss Nigel Tinkler.

 

It’s been quite a year for quietly-spoken Rowan as he also rode his claim out earlier this summer.

Jim Goldie was also in fine form on the historic Town Moor was the Uplawmoor trainer saddled a one-two on the opening day.

 

Sound Of Iona, sent off at 12–1, led home 100-30 favourite Primo’s Comet and it was close to being a tartan Tricast as Iain Jardine’s Glory Fighter was a length back in seventh place.

 

If you were lucky enough to plump for the Goldie pair in a forecast the Tote Exacta paid a tasty £64!

Harry Derham, stable jockey to the powerful Paul Nicholls yard, was singing the praises of Perth after he enjoyed his first success at the Scone track.

 

He told me on Racing TV that Carlisle, Cartmel, Hexham and Sedgefield are the only remaining racecourses where he hasn’t ridden a winner yet.

 

There was another ‘first’ at Perth as Peter Coleman rode his maiden winner on 18-1 chance Raymond.

 

It was also his first ride over hurdles as a conditional as his previous two mounts had come on the Flat as an amateur rider.

 

Peter, who hails from the Dundalk area in Ireland, is based with Raymond’s Carluke trainer Keith Dalgleish.

 

It’s great to welcome Kelso back as the borders track race for the first time this autumn.

 

It’s was way back on March 16th that Kelso staged its most recent fixture and some decent quality national hunt action is always guaranteed.

 

I’m hearing a bumper and beefed up Premier Hurdle day is being planned in March when the ITV cameras will be in attendance.

 

This week all eyes will be on Ayr for the QTS Ayr Gold festival which culminates with the big race itself on Saturday.

 

As always it is a wide-open betting contest and my two against the field are Dakota Gold for in-form regular Ayr visitor Michael Dods and Summerghand, the 22-1 hero of August’s Unibet Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood for David O’Meara.
