It was a momentous weekend for British Champion Conditional Jockey, Patrick Wadge. As well as riding out his claim in a race at Kelso which brought up his trainer Lucinda Russell’s 1000th career winner, he was the recipient of the inaugural Caledonian Spirit Award.
Patrick received his award from Zara Tindall at the Caledonian Racing Society’s gala dinner at the Caledonian Club in Belgravia, London.
The award, which will now be presented annually, recognises a young up and coming personality in the sport who captures the ‘true spirit of racing’.
Patrick said: “It was a great honour and a privilege to pick up such a prestigious award. I didn’t have the easiest of starts in the sport so I suppose it is recognition of what determination and persistence can do to get me to where I am today.”
It took 63 rides for Patrick to notch up his first win in the saddle. He even considered quitting the sport as winning seemed to elude him. The award coincided with Patrick riding out his claim with a winner at Hexham on Friday and a double at Kelso on Saturday. He has now had 76 winners in his relatively short career. As Champion Conditional he follows in the illustrious footsteps of Sean Bowen, Harry Cobden, and Bryony Frost.
The new award has been initiated by the Caledonian Racing Society, whose Chair, Debs Thomson was co-owner of 2017 Grand National winner One for Arthur. Debs said: “The judges felt that Patrick absolutely captures the true spirit of our sport. His determination and resilience epitomise so much about racing. Never give up and the dream will remain alive. Work hard, stick at it, and with a bit of luck, you will get your just rewards! I suspect this is a weekend that young Patrick won’t forget!”
